What Are the Kumano Sanzan? Basic Information Made Simple
The "Kumano Sanzan" is the collective name for three sacred shrines located in the southern part of Wakayama Prefecture: Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha. Revered since ancient times as a "land of rebirth," this sacred area has long drawn pilgrims of all backgrounds—from emperors and nobles to common people—who undertook the journey known as "Kumano Mode" (the Kumano pilgrimage).
Each of the three shrines enshrines a different principal deity, yet they share a unique system of faith in which they also enshrine one another's gods. For this reason, visiting all three shrines together has long been considered deeply meaningful. Along with the pilgrimage routes known as the "Kumano Kodo," the Kumano Sanzan is registered as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The Order for Visiting the Kumano Sanzan | A Recommended Model Route
The Classic Route: "Hongu → Hayatama → Nachi"
Following the traditional pilgrimage order, most visitors travel in the sequence of Kumano Hongu Taisha → Kumano Hayatama Taisha → Kumano Nachi Taisha. Starting deep in the mountains at Hongu, descending to Hayatama Taisha in Shingu, and finally concluding at Nachi Taisha overlooking the majestic Nachi Falls, this classic route lets you experience the ever-changing natural beauty of Kumano.
A Flexible Order Based on Your Transportation Is Also Fine
When traveling by car or bus, many visitors reverse the order to Nachi → Hayatama → Hongu depending on their accommodation or starting point. Since it is said at the Kumano Sanzan that "the blessings are the same no matter in what order you visit," locals recommend simply choosing the route that works best for you.
Points to Know Before Your Visit
- Each of the three shrines has its own distinct character, so it's best to allow plenty of time to visit them
- Walking even a short section of the Kumano Kodo deepens your appreciation of Kumano's spiritual world
- With many mountain paths and stone steps, comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended
