A 2-Night, 3-Day Model Itinerary for Wakayama & Nanki
The Nanki region in southern Wakayama Prefecture is a place where sea, mountains, and prayer come together as one. Dotted with World Heritage sites including the Kumano Sanzan and breathtaking spots overlooking the Pacific Ocean, Nanki offers a wealth of attractions you can savor in a condensed form over just 2 nights and 3 days. Here, we introduce a recommended loop itinerary ideal for first-time visitors.
Day 1: From Shingu to Kumano Hayatama Taisha and Kumano Hongu Taisha
Start your journey around JR Shingu Station. After praying for safe travels at the vermilion-painted Kumano Hayatama Taisha, head along the Kumano River—known for its riverine pilgrimage route—toward Kumano Hongu Taisha. The sight of the great torii gate at Oyunohara, the shrine's former site, towering over the plain is truly awe-inspiring. For your overnight stay, soak in historic hot springs at Yunomine Onsen, said to be the oldest hot spring in Japan, or at nearby Kawayu Onsen.
Day 2: Nachi Falls, Kumano Nachi Taisha, and Heading South Along the Coast
On Day 2, complete your tour of the Kumano Sanzan with visits to Kumano Nachi Taisha and Nachi Falls. The thunderous roar of Japan's tallest waterfall is an unforgettable experience. In the afternoon, travel south along the coast, stopping by the striking rock formations of Hashigui-iwa and Cape Shionomisaki, the southernmost point of Honshu, before arriving in the Shirahama area.
Day 3: Enjoy Shirahama's Coastal Views and Cuisine
On your final day, visit the white sands of Shirarahama Beach and the famous sunset spots Senjojiki and Sandanbeki. Enjoy a lunch of fresh seafood before heading home from Nanki-Shirahama.
Even in just 2 nights and 3 days, you can fully savor the diverse charms of Nanki—pilgrimage paths, hot springs, and ocean scenery—for a truly luxurious journey.
