Shirahama Airport: The Gateway to Kumano Kodo Sightseeing
Nanki-Shirahama Airport is the closest access hub to the southern Kii Peninsula, reachable in about one hour from Tokyo (Haneda). For travelers who want to walk the Kumano Kodo, it's located closer than Kansai International Airport, making it a great option for using your time efficiently. Knowing the transportation options from the airport to the Kumano area in advance will make your trip much smoother once you arrive.
Main Access Methods to the Kumano Kodo
Rental Cars Offer the Greatest Flexibility
Shirahama Airport has rental car company counters, so you can hit the road immediately after leaving the terminal. The drive to Takijiri-oji, the starting point of the Kumano Kodo Nakahechi route, and to the area around Kumano Hongu Taisha includes mountain roads, but the scenery along the way is part of the enjoyment. To reach Kumano Nachi Taisha and Daimon-zaka, the common route is to head south along the coastal National Route 42.
Using Local Buses and Trains
Another option is to take the airport shuttle bus to JR Shirahama Station, and from there transfer to the limited express "Kuroshio" train or local buses. For the Nakahechi area, Ryujin Bus departs from Kii-Tanabe Station, while Kii-Katsuura Station serves as the hub for the Nachi area.
Travel Tips
Since each section of the Kumano Kodo has a different access point, we recommend deciding which route you'd like to walk first, then choosing your means of transportation. Public transport runs on a limited schedule, so be sure to check timetables in advance.
