The Appeal of a Half-Day Model Course in Shingu

Located in the Kumano region of Wakayama Prefecture, Shingu City is a town of history and faith, home to several component assets of the World Heritage "Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range." Since its highlights are compactly clustered, you can thoroughly visit the main spots in just half a day. Here we introduce a model course that's perfect even for first-time visitors to Shingu.

Half-Day Sightseeing Model Course

1. Start with a Visit to Kumano Hayatama Taisha

First, head to Kumano Hayatama Taisha, one of the three grand shrines of Kumano (Kumano Sanzan). The vermilion-lacquered shrine buildings are beautiful, and within the grounds stands a towering sacred nagi tree. Just walking along the approach brings a refreshing feeling—this is a classic Shingu sightseeing spot.

2. Climb to Gotobiki Rock at Kamikura Shrine

Next, visit Kamikura Shrine, a subordinate shrine of Kumano Hayatama Taisha. At the top of its steep stone steps sits the massive sacred boulder known as "Gotobiki Rock," with sweeping views of the Shingu townscape and the Kumano Sea below. Be sure to wear comfortable walking shoes.

3. Take a Break at Jofuku Park

Located right in front of the station, Jofuku Park is associated with Xu Fu (Jofuku), who is said to have traveled from China in search of the elixir of immortality. The striking vermilion gate makes it a perfect spot for a stroll or a rest.

4. Visit Ukishima Forest and Literary Sites

If you have extra time, consider visiting the "Shingu Igasawa Floating Island Plant Community (Ukishima Forest)," a nationally designated natural monument, or the Memorial Museum of Haruo Sato, a writer from Shingu. It makes for a fitting conclusion where you can experience both literature and nature.

Tips for Enjoying Shingu Sightseeing in Half a Day

All the spots are within walking distance or a short ride from each other, making Shingu an efficient destination to explore. This is also a great half-day plan before heading further out to Kumano Hongu Taisha or the Nachi area.
