About the Great Torii of Oyunohara

Located in Hongu-cho, Tanabe City, Wakayama Prefecture, Oyunohara is the former site where Kumano Hongu Taisha once stood. Until a massive flood in the Meiji era prompted its relocation to the current site, this place was the heart of Kumano worship. The great torii gate at the entrance stands approximately 34 meters tall and 42 meters wide — one of the largest in Japan — welcoming countless worshippers as a symbol of Kumano.

Tips for Your Visit

The great torii gate stands out even from a distance, and its silhouette appears especially mystical in the morning mist or at dusk. Beyond the gate, the approach is wrapped in silence, offering a quiet moment to reflect on the history of the Kumano Kodo pilgrimage trails. We recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and allowing plenty of time to savor the experience.
