Know the Toilet & Convenience Store Situation on the Kumano Kodo

The World Heritage "Kumano Kodo" is a pilgrimage route that winds through rich, unspoiled nature. Unlike in the city, convenience stores and restrooms aren't found around every corner, and depending on the route, there are sections where you may not come across any facilities for several hours. To walk with peace of mind, preparation beforehand is essential.

The Golden Rule: Stop at Every Toilet You Find

Along the Kumano Kodo, toilets can be found at trailheads, rest stops at mountain passes, villages, and near shrines and temples. However, once you enter the mountains, it's often a long distance to the next toilet, so the basic rule is: "If you see one, use it." Especially on mountain-pass sections of the Nakahechi route, or on deep mountain routes like Okumotorigoe and Kogumotorigoe, make it a habit to go before you start. Carrying a portable toilet gives you extra peace of mind in case of emergency.

Stock Up at Convenience Stores Before You Leave Town

You'll find convenience stores and supermarkets in central Tanabe City, Shingu City, and around Kii-Katsuura Station, which serve as gateways to the Kumano Kodo. However, once you head into the mountains, they're almost nowhere to be seen. The rule of thumb is to stock up on drinks, trail snacks, and rain gear in town before setting off. Small villages sometimes have shops or vending machines, but their operating hours may be short, so don't rely on them too much.

For a Comfortable Walk Through Kumano

It may feel inconvenient, but that's exactly why the Kumano Kodo offers such untouched nature and quiet serenity. With solid preparation, you can enjoy a calm and fulfilling pilgrimage journey.
