Kumano Kodo Nakahechi, Daimon-zaka

When planning a 3-day, 2-night walk along the Kumano Kodo, the most common question is 'where should I stay each night?' Our recommendation is to place your longest walking day in the middle, on day two. That way, you won't carry travel fatigue into day one, and you'll have breathing room for your return trip on day three.

Think of the 3 days as a 'mountain-shaped' energy curve

Kumano's highlights—Nachi, Shingu, and Hongu—are scattered across a wide area. Cramming all three days with the same intensity often means you'll spend the whole trip just moving between places.

Using this mountain-shaped rhythm as your foundation, there are two patterns depending on where you stay.

Pattern A | The 'Hub' Plan: Two Nights Around Hongu

This works well for travelers who prefer not to repack. Spend both nights in the Kumano Hongu hot spring area, such as Yunomine Onsen or Kawayu Onsen.

Day 1: Ease in around the Hongu area

After arriving, visit Kumano Hongu Taisha and walk out to Oyunohara, the former shrine site. The giant torii gate is far more impressive in person than in photos. In the evening, relax in your inn's hot spring bath.

Day 2: Walk the Nakahechi route

Take on the Nakahechi section that leads into Hongu. If you're unsure about your stamina, the half-day route from Hosshinmon-oji to Hongu is a good benchmark. Those who want a longer walk can start from an oji (shrine) further back along the trail. After a full day on the Kodo, the evening hot spring feels like the ultimate reward.

Day 3: Savor the afterglow at Yunomine Onsen

Stroll through Yunomine Onsen and admire the yunohana (mineral deposits) around the town. Buses are infrequent, so check your return times the day before to be safe.

Pattern B | The 'Traverse' Plan: From Katsuura to Hongu

This plan suits travelers who want to experience both Nachi Falls and Hongu.

Day 1: First night at Katsuura Onsen

Stay at the seaside Katsuura Onsen and rest up for the next day. For dinner, enjoy the fresh seafood this port town is known for.

Day 2: Walk around Nachi, then move to Hongu

In the morning, walk the stone-paved Daimon-zaka slope up to Nachisan. After visiting Kumano Nachi Taisha and Nachi Falls, head toward Hongu in the afternoon. Travel times can be unpredictable, so the key is not to be too ambitious with your walking distance on this day.

Day 3: A short walk on the Nakahechi near Hongu

Spend the morning walking a short section of the ancient trail near Hongu, then end your trip with a visit to the shrine.

Which should you choose?

Best forRecommended pattern
Serious walkers who love hot springsA (Hub plan)
Travelers who want to see both Nachi and HonguB (Traverse plan)

Points to keep in mind for both patterns

Simply placing your walking day in the middle brings a natural rhythm to your three days. Don't overpack your schedule—let yourself move at Kumano's own pace.
