The Appeal of the Kumano Kodo for Families

The World Heritage–listed Kumano Kodo is a vast network of pilgrimage trails stretching hundreds of kilometers. Walking the entire route is a serious undertaking, but there are actually plenty of short sections that families can enjoy together with ease. Moss-covered stone paths and forest trails dappled with sunlight offer children an extraordinary adventure, as well as a wonderful opportunity to learn about history and nature.

Recommended Sections for Families

Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha

One of the most popular sections of the Nakahechi route, this trail is largely downhill. Scenic views of rural satoyama landscapes keep children engaged along the way, and reaching Kumano Hongu Taisha at the end gives a rewarding sense of accomplishment that motivates young walkers.

Daimon-zaka

This stone-paved path leads up to Kumano Nachi Taisha, and its relatively short distance makes it ideal for families. Surrounded by towering cedar trees, the solemn atmosphere creates an unforgettable experience—and the scenery is wonderfully photogenic.

Kozaka

Located in the Shingu area, this short and relatively flat section features ocean viewpoints along the way. Its varied scenery makes it a favorite for younger children.

Tips for Walking with Children

Even on a short section, you can feel the mystical atmosphere unique to the Kumano Kodo. We hope your family takes that first unforgettable step together.
