Kumano Hongu Taisha Annual Festival

"What should I wear when visiting Kumano Hongu Taisha?" — it's a question we hear often, even from locals. The short answer: this isn't a place that requires formal attire. Still, if you're going to stand before the deities, it's worth aiming for clothing that's easy to walk in, comfortable to move in, and clean in appearance.

Choose Your Outfit Based on "Three Movements"

If you picture the movements you'll make on the shrine grounds, your choices naturally narrow down.

1. Climbing the Stone Steps

Past the torii gate, the approach continues up a long flight of stone steps, with the shrine buildings sitting at a slightly elevated spot. High heels or shoes with slippery soles can make the climb and descent nerve-wracking. Sneakers with a bit of grip, or any comfortable walking shoes, will put you at ease.

2. Walking on Gravel and Dirt

The approach and surrounding paths aren't all paved — in places you'll feel gravel or earth underfoot. Sandals aren't impossible, but small stones easily slip in, and rainy days make them especially unstable. If you're wearing a skirt, choose a length that doesn't flare out too wide so you can move freely.

3. Placing Your Hands Together and Bowing

When you pray, you'll bow deeply and bring your hands together. Clothing that's cut low at the shoulders or chest, or that's extremely short, means worrying with every movement. Clothes that don't restrict you when you bend are the key to a comfortable visit. It's also customary to remove your hat before the main hall, so keep one that's easy to slip off.

A Little Something Extra for Each Season

For Hikers Coming off the Kumano Kodo: Add One Small Touch

It's not unusual for people arriving at Hongu after hiking the Kodo to still be dressed for the trail. Even so, before praying, simply wiping away sweat, brushing mud off your shoes and pant hems, and either holding your backpack in front or setting it to the side helps shift your mindset. A thin jacket in your pack can both ward off a sweat-chilled body and quickly transform your look into something suitable for approaching the shrine.

Small Items Worth Having Before You Pray

There's no single "correct" outfit for Kumano Hongu Taisha. What matters is being able to walk the stone steps safely, and to calm your mind as you place your hands together in prayer. Pick something clean, easy to move in, and relaxed — then take in your visit along with the air of the Kumano forest.
