The Appeal of a Kumano Drive
Spread across the southern part of Wakayama Prefecture, the Kumano area is a special place where the majestic Pacific coastline, deep mountains, and a world of ancient mythology all coexist. The greatest appeal of driving through Kumano is being able to experience three very different kinds of scenery—sea, mountains, and sacred sites—all in a single day. With every turn of the road, the landscape changes, and you're sure to be captivated.

Morning: Enjoy Spectacular Coastal Scenery
Start along National Route 42, which runs along the Kumano-nada Sea. A seaside drive while gazing at the sparkling blue Pacific is simply exhilarating. Pull over at viewpoints along the rugged coastline of strange rock formations or at the lookouts over the intricate rias coast, and you'll encounter dynamic natural beauty.
Midday: Into the World of the Kumano Sanzan and Myth
The Kumano Sanzan—Kumano Hongu Taisha, Kumano Hayatama Taisha, and Kumano Nachi Taisha—form the heart of this drive. The area around Nachi Falls, in particular, offers a mystical space enveloped in deep green and the sound of water.
Afternoon: Drive the Scenic Mountain Roads
For the return trip, take the mountain route. Along the roads following the Kumano River and over scenic mountain passes, you can enjoy sights unique to Kumano, such as seas of clouds and beautiful valleys.
Tips for Enjoying the Drive
The roads in the Kumano area are winding and often mountainous, so planning with plenty of extra time is reassuring. The scenery changes with each season, making it a destination where you'll always find something new, no matter how many times you visit.
