Shingu Port in Kumano: A Maritime Gateway to World Heritage Exploration
Located in Shingu City, Wakayama Prefecture, Shingu Port is a harbor town facing the Kumano Sea, where the Kuroshio Current flows. In recent years, it has become known as a port that welcomes large cruise ships from both Japan and abroad, with more and more travelers choosing to visit the Kumano area from the sea. The majestic mountain ranges of the Kii Peninsula and the endless blue sea viewed from onboard offer a special scenery that is hard to experience by plane or train.
World Heritage Sites of Kumano to Visit by Cruise
Upon disembarking at Shingu Port, you'll find yourself at the heart of the World Heritage 'Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range.' Kumano Hayatama Taisha, one of the three grand shrines of Kumano (Kumano Sanzan), is relatively close to the port, where you'll be greeted by its vermilion-lacquered shrine buildings and the divine sacred Nagi tree. Venture a little further and you can also access Kumano Nachi Taisha and Nachi Falls, where the waterfall itself is worshipped as a deity, as well as Kumano Hongu Taisha, a sacred site deep in the mountains.
Enjoy Two Spectacular Views: Sea and River
Another highlight of Kumano tourism is the Kumano River boat ride, also registered as a UNESCO World Heritage site. Floating down the river embraced by mountains is truly a luxurious experience of 'tracing the pilgrimage route by water.' Combined with a cruise visit, it creates a uniquely Kumano journey where you can enjoy the sea, river, and mountains all at once.
Strolling Through the Town of Shingu
Within walking distance of the port, you'll find spots steeped in history and literature, such as the memorial hall of literary master Sato Haruo and the ruins of Shingu Castle. Don't forget to savor Kumano's local cuisine, including fresh seafood and mehari-zushi (rice balls wrapped in pickled mustard leaves).
