Kumano Kodo Nakahechi, Hosshinmon-oji

The Time from Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha Is the Sum of 'Three Times'

"How long does it take from Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha?" is a question we often receive. The distance is generally said to be around 7 km, and walking alone takes roughly 2 to 3 hours. However, that figure alone does not determine how your actual day will unfold.

Our recommendation is to think of the required time as being divided into the following three parts:

※Distances and times vary depending on conditions. Please check the latest information and maps before you set out.

1. Time Spent Walking: A Mix of Gentle Descents and Ascents

From Hosshinmon-oji toward Hongu, the trail passes through mountain villages and groves of cedar trees. There are few major difficult sections, but there are ups and downs. If you don't walk much in daily life, it's reassuring to allow a little more time than the standard map estimate.

2. Time Spent Pausing: This Is Where Time Expands Most

Along the way, there are highlights such as Mizunomi-oji and Fushiogami-oji. Fushiogami-oji is the spot where pilgrims are said to have bowed in worship toward the distant grounds of Hongu. While enjoying the view here, 30 minutes can pass in the blink of an eye.

A Rough Way to Think About It

Adding pausing time to the 2–3 hours of walking, allowing 3.5 to 5 hours gives you comfortable breathing room.

3. Time After Arriving at Hongu: 'Reaching the Goal' Isn't the End

Once you arrive at Hongu, you'll want to worship, receive a goshuin stamp, and if possible extend your walk to Oyunohara, the former shrine grounds. Allowing about 1 to 1.5 hours here prevents the situation of "arriving but having no time, so worship becomes a rush."

Deciding Your Departure Time by Working Backward from the Return Bus

The Nakahechi area does not have frequent bus service. So we recommend working backward in the following order:

1. Check the time of the bus (or shuttle) departing from Hongu in advance
2. Subtract worship and strolling time (1–1.5 hours)
3. Subtract walking time and pausing time (3.5–5 hours)
4. Subtract travel time to reach Hosshinmon-oji

The time you arrive at is a guide for "the latest time I should start walking." In seasons when days are short, also check the sunset time.

What to Do When You're Running Behind Schedule

Even if you fall behind schedule, there's no need to panic. The important thing is not to force your walking pace faster, but to decide in advance which parts you'll skip. For example, adjustments like keeping lunch light or limiting the number of photo stops can be made without straining your body.

Summary

The time required from Hosshinmon-oji to Kumano Hongu Taisha cannot be measured by "walking time" alone. Adding pausing time and time at Hongu, then working backward from your return transport, makes for a day without strain. With a timetable that allows for breathing room, please savor the Kumano Kodo at a leisurely pace.
